An additive is a substance that is added to food or feed for a specific purpose. Examples of additives are preservatives, antioxidants, food acids, stabilisers, dyes, flavour enhancers etc.

Food additives come under the European additives’ regulation (1333/2008) and are indicated by an E number.

Analyses of additives    

Several analyses are available for additives:

  • Preservatives: sulphite, nitrite
  • Food acids: acetic acid, citric acid, lactic acid
  • Antioxidants: vitamins, selenium
  • Dyes: water-soluble (synthetic), water-soluble (qualitative), tartrazine, brilliant green, orange-yellow
